Transition to Winter with Cozy Layers, Textures and Colors

Cold weather has finally arrived in Northern California and in Northern climates. If you are like me, you have been ready to wrap up in a sweater and soft overcoat for a while. Nothing says fall and is as comforting as the softness of knits. This season, there are so many great looks to choose from. Rich colors, textures, and statement accessories take center stage this season.

As I think about the transition to winter that is occurring, my thoughts turn to deep, jewel tone colors. Cobalt and burgundy are two of my favorites. So I styled a romantic look that feels comfortable and provides warmth for the cooling weather. The look shown here combines the rich fall colors, varied textures and layers so popular this season.

Few days ago, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Meaghan from Pebble and Pearl, who is a fashion blogger just like me but is also a gorgeous model. She is a great example of how the same pieces can look so different on someone else. Her fantastic frame gave full justice to the swinging skirt and cropped top combo. I am excited to be sharing a series of posts we shot together.

The pleated skirt is the ideal item to move around easily and transform the look for day to night.  The relaxed sweater coat with its edgy fun patches, is a perfect item to wear with denim or as shown in this example with something more elegant like the pleated skirt.

To pull it together, I added a burgundy cold shoulder cropped sweater that lends a soft note, but adds a punch of color to the gray pleated skirt and cobalt jacket. To complete this outfit, a pair of sumptuous burgundy suede booties pick up the sweater color and add that touch of contrast to the outfit. The bold chain necklace provides contrast against the deep cobalt blue coat.

You could easily change the look of this sweater coat by wrapping a big shawl or scarf over over it. This sweater coat would also look great thrown over jeans with combat boots and a plaid scarf. You could top it off with a wide-brimmed felt hat for a bit of drama.

I hope this was helpful as you make the transition to your winter wardrobes. I would love to hear from you how you are making the transition.

The clothing and accessories shown here are available at the Oliamoda Holiday Edition Pop-Up Shop on December 10, 12-7pm at the Skool on K Restaurant on K Street in Sacramento. Please email me if you have questions. See selected pieces from the Holiday Edition here at or @oliamoda on Instagram.

Thank you for reading and keep styling!

I’m intrigued that Sacramento has blossomed a local fashion designer with a European flair! I too am into Armani, et al but it’s certainly refreshing to see alternatives to mainstream fashion houses. Btw, you might find the following website interesting:

    The Satorialist

Perhaps to wet your creative appetite…

    Best Wishes
