How to wear vintage clothing and look current
For those of you who know me, you know I love to shop for vintage clothing. I find it to be so fun especially when done in the right kind of stores. Wearing vintage is a way to ensure your clothing is entirely unique. I love finding a treasure that I can reinvent in a modern and edgy way.
Many of you have the same concern when thinking of wearing vintage. Will I look like in a costume or look outdated? In this post I will cover a few steps to follow when dressing vintage. I will share an outfit that is 90 percent vintage and represents unexpected pairing of eras.
First of all, I recommend picking garments that look like current trends. We all know that fashion comes back and most modern designers and fashion houses have massive archives of vintage garments that they are constantly adding to and from which they draw inspiration. I chose this flare pant from the 70s retro era. The style of pants is very much on trend right now.
Here is a great example on how to wear a wide legged, high waisted pant in a fresh and subtle approach.
Secondly, think contemporary hair and makeup. Chances are, unless you are dedicating hours to recreating precise vintage hairstyles and makeup application, your hair and makeup are already going to look comparatively modern. With a hair cut like mine you are guaranteed a modern approach no matter what vintage piece you decide to wear.
Thirdly, choose modern accessories. Pairing vintage clothing with decidedly modern shoes, bags and sunglasses is an easy way to dramatically ground an otherwise whimsical garment. My sunglasses and earrings are the modern accessories of this outfit and they do the trick just fine tying the look together. The 60s quilted purse was a treasured find during one of my trips to visit family in Idaho.
Finally, my personal favorite is the mixing of the eras. Even when wearing head-to-toe vintage, accessories included, it is possible to accessorize in ways that make your outfit seem more relevant. Mixing eras can, surprisingly, have the same effect as blending new and vintage pieces. Unexpected pops of vibrant color like the vibrant color of my pants. Surprising combinations of textiles and silhouettes like the pairing of my wide legged pants and tailored vintage vest with chained golden buttons and layers of contrasting patterns always serve to make an outfit appear both uniquely modern and totally timeless.
Wearing a vintage piece has benefits beyond a fashion statement. It is also a way to help the environment by conserving resources, and supporting small businesses expressing your own creativity and unique spirit. Adding vintage to your wardrobe is like adding more paint colors to your life’s palette. So go ahead and add some vintage for your summer and fall lineup – no need to wait for next season to go back in time!
